Using the built in brush to apply Clearcoat

  • Do I really need to apply Clearcoat? Yes, the clearcoat protects the underlying basecoat so do not skip this step.
  • Preparation: Ensure the basecoat is completely dry to the touch before beginning the clearcoat application. This prevents the clearcoat from reacting with the basecoat.
  • Application Technique: Use the built-in brush to apply several thin coats of clearcoat. Apply each coat gently to “float” the clearcoat over the basecoat without exerting pressure. Applying pressure can cause the clearcoat to act as a solvent, which may dissolve and remove the basecoat.
  • Drying Time: Allow ten to twenty minutes of drying time between each coat. Usually, letting the clearcoat dry overnight is sufficient for it to cure. However, in cooler temperatures below 70 degrees Fahrenheit, the curing process can take significantly longer.
  • Sanding and Polishing: Once the clearcoat is fully dry, inspect for any imperfections. These can be smoothed out using 1000 grit wet and dry sandpaper with plenty of water for wet sanding. After sanding, allow the clearcoat to dry for at least three days before moving on to polishing. Use a high-quality automotive rubbing compound (cutting creme) to polish the area. Use a clean, soft cotton fabric such as a T-shirt to avoid scratching the surface. Ensure the area is completely dry and free from any sanding residue before polishing.
  • Final Steps: After polishing, it is advisable to wait 30 days before applying automotive wax to ensure the clearcoat has fully hardened and cured. This waiting period helps prevent any damage to the clearcoat during the waxing process.
  • Additional Tips:
    • Darkening of Paint: Be aware that the paint may appear darker once the clearcoat is applied. This effect is due to the clearcoat’s enhancing properties, which can deepen the perceived color of the basecoat. To avoid this, you would need to spray and blend the paint and clearcoat.
    • Note on Materials: Do not use a bath towel, washcloth, or any rough material for polishing or cleaning as these can scratch the surface and damage the finish.
